Dalum Griddles

for simple, fun, and versatile cooking.

Dalum griddles are designed to make outdoor cooking easy. Part of the simplicity comes from the ability to use various heat sources when cooking on Dalum griddles. In addition to cooking over an open fire, they also work great with gas for cooking. Dalum griddles are lightweight, meaning less material needs to be heated up, requiring less energy compared to traditional griddles or frying pans made from thicker steel or cast iron. This means you’ll cook faster and consume less fuel, which is better for the environment.

Here, we provide tips for cooking on a griddle using gas as a heat source.

Different types of gas burners

There are two popular types of gas burners for cooking on a griddle. One type is called the Gas Ring Burner, and the other is the Portable Gas Burner.

Simply put, the Gas Ring Burner has a larger diameter and provides more direct heat when cooking on the griddle, while the Portable Gas Burner has a smaller diameter and delivers less direct heat during cooking.

The advantage of the portable models is their convenience—they are easy to take along for outdoor cooking, such as on a hike or a picnic.

The Gas Ring Burner is a larger variant of the gas burner, featuring gas rings. These types are a bit bigger and are popular for outdoor cooking in the garden or backyard.

Different types of portable gas burners

There are mainly two types of portable gas stoves to choose from. One model is the top-mounted gas stove, where the burner is screwed directly onto a gas bottle. The other variant is the ground-standing gas stove, where the burner is placed directly on the ground, and the stove's hose is connected to the gas bottle.

There are primarily three different sizes of gas bottles for portable gas burners: 100 grams, 230 grams, and 450 grams. These bottles contain different amounts of gas, with the larger ones providing more gas and lasting longer.

There are various types of gas burners available on the market – one that works particularly well with Dalum griddles is the Primus Mimer stove.

Things to consider when cooking with a portable gas burner

Gas burner size - Portable gas burners have a burner head with a smaller diameter than the diameter of the griddle. This means you get less direct heat when cooking with a portable gas burner compared to cooking over an open fire or using a gas ring burner.

Our recommendation is to choose a portable gas burner with the largest burner head (wide flame) possible so that the griddle receives as much direct heat as possible, such as the Primus Mimer Stove.

Gas system height - If you are using a top-mounted gas burner, ensure that the gas system (mounted gas burner on the gas bottle) is not so tall that it won’t fit under the griddle.

We recommend having a few centimeters of distance between the gas system and the underside of the griddle while cooking. If the distance is too small, there’s a risk of burning directly under the burner, and if the distance is too large, the griddle won’t get hot enough for cooking.

The gas burner has a fixed height, but you can choose a gas bottle with a suitable height to fit under the griddle when the griddle legs are mounted. We usually recommend having the griddle’s legs attached when cooking with a portable gas burner, as the burner supports are relatively small and it can become unstable if the griddle is placed directly on the supports.

If cooking with a hose-mounted stove, these have a lower height, and you’ll need to place something under the gas burner to bring it closer to the griddle during cooking. For example, you can gather some loose small stones to place the gas burner on, or if you have a pot for a camping stove, that can work well too. Our tip is to find a solution that works well for your specific setup.

Windshield and heat reflector

A windshield is a great piece of equipment for outdoor cooking, both for cooking over an open fire and, not least, when cooking with gas. The windshield offers many benefits. It protects against the wind, but it also helps retain heat, as it reflects the warmth back and keeps it in place. This means you use less energy, and the gas bottle lasts longer – great for both cooking and the environment. There are various models of windshields and heat reflectors available on the market. In our webshop, you'll find a convenient and compact windshield, the Solo Stove Windscreen, which easily folds up and comes with a practical storage bag.
